A Construção de Atmosferas: Matéria e Tempo na Obra de Peter Zumthor

Abstract

A Construção de Atmosferas é uma dissertação que descreve a metodologia do arquitecto suíço Peter Zumthor, no trabalho sobre a matéria e no seu processo de evolução no tempo, observando como matéria e tempo constituem elementos de construção de atmosferas. Este estudo divide-se em duas partes essenciais. A primeira parte reúne, na “interpretação inicial: matéria escrita”, uma biografia que retrata o percurso de formação e experiência de Peter Zumthor, as ideias e os conceitos defendidos pelo arquitecto, utilizados e aprofundados no exercício da sua arquitectura, e a análise que alguns autores e críticos fazem das suas 'atmosferas'. A segunda parte, dividida em três capítulos, explora três das suas obras principais – Therme em Vals, Kunsthaus em Bregenz e Kolumba em Colónia –, segundo os temas associados a atmosferas enunciados no capítulo anterior. Concordando com o pensamento do arquitecto sobre 'a magia da realidade', que não cabe em nenhuma representação abstracta que substitua a presença no lugar das obras, procura-se identificar estes conceitos a partir do contacto directo com os três casos de estudo seleccionados, constatando que diferem na sua concretização material mas que partilham igual rigor metodológico e construtivo. A terminar, a “interpretação final: tempo descrito” faz uma síntese transversal aos assuntos desenvolvidos.

The Construction of Atmospheres is an essay that describes the methodology of the swiss architect Peter Zumthor, in the work on the matter and its evolution in time, observing how matter and time are essential elements of constructing atmospheres. This study is divided in two essential parts. The first part gathers, in the “initial interpretation: written matter”, a biography that portrays the course of Peter Zumthor's training and experience, the ideas and the concepts espoused by the architect, used and further developed in the course of his architecture, and the analysis that some authors and critics do of his 'atmospheres'. The second part, divided in three chapters, explores three of his major works – Therme Bath in Vals, Kunsthaus in Bregenz and Kolumba in Cologne –, according to the themes associated to atmospheres presented in the previous chapter. Agreeing with the thought of the architect about 'the magic of reality', that does not fit in any abstract representation that overrides presence in the work place, seeks to identify these concepts from a direct contact with the three case studies, becoming clear that they differ in their materialization but that they share equal methodological and constructive coherence. To conclude, the “final interpretation: time described” summarizes the developed issues.
