A mulher no mar: a presença feminina a bordo na expansão marítima portuguesa

Abstract

A expansão marítima é um dos focos de estudo mais impulsionados na historiografia portuguesa, consistindo num fenómeno histórico que contou com o envolvimento de toda uma panóplia de atores de línguas, culturas e costumes distintos. Estudada exclusivamente no masculino por várias décadas, a expansão marítima portuguesa registou, contudo, a participação da mulher, a documentação fazendo referência à sua presença nas embarcações que circulavam nas diferentes zonas do império. Os perfis sociais das passageiras eram tão variados como os motivos que justificavam o seu embarque, o plano oceânico e o “microcosmo” do navio servindo, do mesmo modo, de palco para oportunidades de sociabilização que podiam, ou não, corresponder às expetativas de género, padrões sociais e quadros mentais que se verificavam em terra. A presente dissertação incide nestas questões, procurando complementar a imagem da expansão marítima portuguesa sublinhando o papel e envolvimento femininos nas viagens, entre os séculos XV e XVII; - Title: Women at sea: the female presence aboard in the Portuguese maritime expansion Abstract The maritime expansion is one of the most important objects of study in Portuguese historiography, consisting of a historical phenomenon that counted with the involvement of a whole range of actors of different languages, cultures and customs. Studied as a male centric topic for many decades, the Portuguese maritime expansion nevertheless recorded the participation of women, the sources referring to their presence on vessels that circulated in different areas of the empire. The social profiles of the passengers were as varied as the motives that justified their boarding, the oceanic setting and the “microcosm” of the ship serving, also, as a stage for socialization opportunities that may, or may not have, corresponded to the gender expectations, social patterns and mental frameworks seen on land. This dissertation focuses on these issues, seeking to complement the image of the Portuguese maritime expansion by highlighting the role and involvement of women in the voyages, between the 15th and 17th centuries.
