Adaptação paterna à criança com perturbação do espectro do autismo(PEA)

Abstract

Apesar do grande interesse dos investigadores em compreender o processo de adaptação pelo qual passam pais e mães, aquando da chegada de uma criança com Perturbações do Espectro do Autismo (PEA), as investigações têm tido como foco primário as mães, deixando de parte a experiência individual do pai. O objetivo desta dissertação foi perceber como ocorre o processo adaptativo do pai a uma criança com PEA. A metodologia utilizada foi de natureza qualitativa, recorrendo-se à Grounded Theory. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas a 18 pais de crianças com PEA. Foram identificadas três categorias principais de análise (primeiros sinais, diagnóstico e vivências da parentalidade) que mostram o forte impacto e desafio da chegada de uma criança com PEA. Constatou-se que este é um processo contínuo que tem início no aparecimento dos primeiros sinais de alerta, que se reafirma na fase de diagnóstico e que continua pela vida fora, na expetativa de um futuro promissor e independente para a criança; "Paternal Adaptation to the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder" Abstract: Despite the great interest on the part of researchers in understanding the adaptation process that fathers /mothers go through, upon the arrival of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), most of researches has focused primarily on mothers, leaving aside the part of the father's individual experience. The objective of this dissertation was to understand how the adaptive process of the father to a child with ASD is. The methodology used was of a qualitative nature, using the Grounded Theory. Data were collected through interviews from 18 parents of children with ASD. Three main categories of analysis were identified (first signs, diagnosis and parenting experiences) who shows the strong impact and challenge of the arrival of a child with ASD. It was found that it is a continuous process that begins with the appearance of the first warning signs, which is reaffirmed in the diagnosis phase and continues throughout life, hoping for a promising and independent future for the child.
